The Stripe letter reads differently if you assume Collison is writing for regulators as much as investors. 'GDP of the internet' is a claim about jurisdiction, not market size. Whether that lands depends less on the product than on who decides Stripe is systemically boring enough to leave alone.

Great piece, Lex. As you noted, with all these acquisitions, Stripe's positioning is for maximum aggregation and, ironically, concentration, capitalising on ideas pioneered in the more open Web3 world and pulling them into a Web2 stack.

If Stripe can replicate stablecoins, wallets, and settlement within a closed, permissioned stack and achieve customer adoption without them caring about the underlying rails, what was Web3's decentralisation actually for? Is the lesson here that open networks are only useful as R&D labs for incumbents to harvest?
