Andrei Cherny:

New Data: People Don't Trust Open Banking or Fintechs, But Use Both

…the central challenge that most people had in their financial lives was one, their interests were misaligned with that of their bank. Clearly, for most people the bank makes more money when they make less, when they're doing worse in their life, when there's more overdraft fees, when there's more late fees and so on, but also this misalignment of values. Going back to what we talked about of my life, that people thought about their money, again, not just from a standpoint of dollars and cents, but what is the meaning of it and what do they want do with it, and what kind of life do they want to live, and that if we could create something that's solved for both of those misalignments, of both interests and values, then you'd be really be able to unlock a very different kind of relationship with our customers and be able to create something that would not only do good for those people as individual, but would have a larger positive impact. And that was the conversation that have eventually ended up leading to Aspiration.
